Terms of use and disclaimer

Using GrabTheHammer means you agree to these terms. The short version: our guides are general information, your safety comes first, and some jobs belong to a licensed pro.

Last updated October 8, 2026

The guides are general information

Our guides explain common home repairs in plain language. They aren't professional advice, and they can't account for every home, product or situation. Homes differ in age, materials, wiring and plumbing, so compare what you see in front of you with the guide before you start.

Your safety and your responsibility

You decide whether a job is right for you, and you're responsible for doing it safely. Before you start:

  • Turn off the power, water or gas to what you're working on, and check that it's really off.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your product. If they differ from our guide, follow the manufacturer.
  • Follow your local building codes, and get a permit where one is required.
  • Use the right safety gear, like safety glasses and gloves.
  • Stop if something doesn't look like the guide, smells like burning, or feels unsafe.
  • If you rent, check with your landlord before making repairs.

Jobs that need a licensed pro

We don't give instructions for work on gas lines, inside an electrical panel, or on anything structural. If you smell gas, see sparks or scorch marks, or have water near electrical outlets, stop and call a licensed professional or your utility. In an emergency, call 911. Our emergency steps cover what to do first.

Accuracy

We check every guide against manufacturer instructions and common code requirements, and we update guides when we find something to improve. Even so, mistakes can happen and products change. If you spot an error, please tell us.

Costs, times and calculators

Cost and time ranges on the site, including in our calculators, are typical ranges to help you plan. They aren't quotes or guarantees. Prices vary by area, by store and over time.

Products and brands

When we mention a type of product, it's because it suits the job, not because anyone paid us. We don't accept payment for recommendations.

Limit of liability

GrabTheHammer provides the site as is, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, GrabTheHammer isn't liable for any damage, injury, loss or cost that comes from using the site or following a guide. Using the site and doing repairs is at your own risk.

Our content and images

The guides, photos, diagrams and other content on GrabTheHammer belong to us. You're welcome to link to any page. To copy our text or images onto your own site or into print, please contact us first. See using our images.

Links, videos and ads

Some guides link to manufacturers, safety agencies and YouTube videos made by others. We don't control those sites or videos and aren't responsible for them. Ads on the site are provided by Google. An ad isn't a recommendation from us.

Questions and reports you send us

When you send a question, an answer or a "Did this fix work?" report, you let us show it on the site, edited for length or clarity and without your name or email. We may remove anything that's off-topic, unsafe or abusive. Please don't include personal details you don't want shared. How we handle your information is covered in our privacy policy.

Using the site fairly

Please don't try to break, overload or scrape the site, or use it for anything unlawful.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If we do, the date at the top changes. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
