Fix a loose fence board or sagging gate
A fence board is flapping in the wind, or the gate drags on the ground and won't latch. Both are common problems with wood fences, and both usually come down to loose fasteners or a gate that's pulled out of square.
What's actually going on
Fence boards are nailed or screwed to horizontal rails between posts. Over time, weather loosens nails. Gates sag because their weight pulls the corner opposite the hinges down. An anti-sag kit, a diagonal cable and turnbuckle, pulls it back into square.

Let's fix it
- Reattach loose boardsDrive exterior screws through the board into each rail, about an inch from the edges.
- Check the gate hingesTighten hinge screws. If they spin, use longer screws or move the hinge slightly.
- Install an anti-sag kitAttach the cable from the top corner on the hinge side to the bottom corner on the latch side.
- Tighten the turnbuckleTurn it until the gate lifts back into square and clears the ground.
- Adjust the latchCheck that the latch lines up with the catch. Move the catch if needed.
