Unjam a garbage disposal
You flip the switch and hear a low hum, but nothing spins. A garbage disposal humming but not spinning has power, but something has locked the plate inside. Before you buy a new one, try this. It usually takes about ten minutes and a small hex wrench that's probably stuck to the bottom of the unit already.
What's actually going on
When a disposal hums, the motor is trying to turn but something, often a fruit pit, a bottle cap or a hardened wad of rice, has locked the spinning plate. When it's silent, a built-in breaker has tripped to protect the motor. Both are usually fixed in about five minutes.
Why it happens
Fruit pits, bones, a bottle cap or a stray spoon can jam between the spinning plate and the grinding ring.
Celery, corn husks, potato peels and rice can wrap around or cement the plate in place.
