Fix low shower water pressure

The shower used to feel like a shower, and now it feels like standing under a drizzle. Low shower water pressure is usually mineral buildup in the showerhead, and a bag of vinegar overnight often brings it right back.

What's actually going on

Most tap water carries dissolved minerals, especially calcium. Every time water dries in the shower head, it leaves a bit behind. After a year or two those deposits partly block the nozzles. Vinegar is mildly acidic and dissolves them.

Mineral buildup

Hard water leaves limescale in the tiny nozzles until many of them barely flow.

A clogged flow restrictor

Many showerheads have a small screen or restrictor where they screw on, which catches sediment.

A partly closed valve

After plumbing work, a valve sometimes doesn't get opened all the way again.

A problem with the whole house

If every faucet is weak, it's not the showerhead. It could be the pressure regulator or the main supply.

  1. Check it's just the showerIf the bathroom sink has good pressure, the problem is in the shower head. If every faucet is weak, skip to the call-a-pro section.

  2. Fill a bag with vinegarPut enough white vinegar in a plastic bag to cover the nozzles.

  3. Tie it onSlip the bag over the head and secure it to the arm with a rubber band.

  4. SoakLeave it at least an hour, or overnight for heavy buildup. For brass or nickel finishes, stick to an hour or two.

  5. Scrub and runRemove the bag, scrub the nozzles with a toothbrush, and run hot water for a minute to flush loosened bits.

Still not fixed?

If only the hot water pressure is low, sediment in the water heater or its outlet valve is the likely culprit.

If a soak didn't help, unscrew the showerhead and check the screen inside. Rinse it, or gently pick debris out with a toothpick.

Time to call a pro if you seeLow pressure at every faucet in the house, sudden pressure drops, or brown water. That can mean a failing pressure regulator or a problem with the supply line.

How often should I clean my shower head?

Every 6 months in hard-water areas, yearly elsewhere.

Is low-flow the same as low pressure?

No. Low-flow heads use less water by design but should still feel strong. Weak spray from a low-flow head usually means clogged nozzles.

Why is only my hot water pressure low?

Sediment in the water heater or a partly closed hot-water valve is the usual cause. If only the shower is affected, check the showerhead first.
